RECYCLED PAPER

Content: How to make paper out of recycled paper bits

Materials:  paper bits, warm water, a blender, scissors, aluminum pan, a towel, rolling pin.

Goal: (Learning-how-to-learn) At the end of this workshop, pre-service teachers are going to be able to conceive a class in which these type of activity –the creation of paper based on recycling materials- is implemented as an original way to encourage children’s Hand-Eye Coordination, memory, creativity, the capacity of attention, imagination, emotional development, motor skills improvement, team work, environmental consciousness, confidence, among others.

Steps to create paper:
  • Tear scrap paper into small pieces.
  • Soak the scrap paper bits in warm water.
  • Make a frame. This step can be done while your paper scraps are soaking.
  • Make a slurry of paper pulp.
  • Dip the pan frame into the tub and allow it to fill with paper fibers. Gently move it under the water to ensure even distribution.
  • Holding the pan level, lift it out of the tub.
  • Place the frame pan, paper-side down, onto a clean, dry towel. Lift the frame and screen or wire mesh away, leaving the paper on the towel.
  • Put another towel over the paper.
  • Press the towel on top of the paper using a rolling pin.
  • Gently lift the top towel off of your homemade paper.
  • Peel the paper off of the bottom towel. Set it aside to dry overnight.
